Although
gold is probably the oldest metal to be worked by man, it has endured
the test of time and secured its place amongst today's modern technology.
Early metallurgists soon realised the exclusive qualities gold has to
offer and have included it in many modern processes, for example, in
the production of spectacle frames. Because gold is naturally a soft,
malleable metal, in order to make spectacle frames it must be alloyed
with other elements to strengthen it. Rolled Gold is a process that
begins with a base metal which is then wrapped in a sleeve of raw gold
material. This layer of 14 Kt Nickel free Gold is bonded by heat and
pressure to the durable base alloy. A unique aspect of the rolled gold
process is that the gold moves with the base metal as one uniform material.
This process of working the material until it reaches the prescribed
diameter makes it more durable. The practical advantage of rolled gold
frames lies in the thickness of the gold surrounding the base metal.
It is usually three to six times that found in gold plated frames. Therefore,
there is unlikely to be any visible erosion of the gold within a normal
lifespan. Another advantage is that they are easily repaired as they
are unaffected by heat. The term gold filled is often used instead of
rolled gold. Credit for the invention made about one hundred years ago
must go to the jewellery industry.
WHY IS THE GOLD CONTENT OF MY SPECTACLE FRAMES
SO IMPORTANT?
Gold's use extends beyond that of ornamentation and it is widely used
in the production of spectacle frames due to its resistance to corrosion
and allergic reaction.
HOW CAN I VERIFY THE GOLD CONTENT
OF MY SAVILE ROW SPECTACLE FRAMES ?
Each Savile Row frame is stamped on the inner area of the bridge
piece with a verification mark "14KT RG". This symbol guarantees the
gold content of your Savile Row frame.
